Declarative Knowledge
|
What declarative knowledge should students be in the process of acquiring & integrating? As a result of the unit, the student will know or understand |
What experiences or activities will be used to help students acquire & integrate this knowledge? |
What strategies will be used to help students construct meaning, organize and/or store the knowledge? |
Describe what will be done. |

Procedural Knowledge
|
What procedural knowledge will students be in the process of acquiring & integrating? As a result of this unit, students will be able to: |
What will be done to help students construct models, shape & internalize the knowledge? |
Describe what will be done. |
|
1. Provide manuals as resource materials whenever they are available. 2. Lecture/demonstration of equipment and software followed by hands on lab use by each student. 3. Class discussion concerning problems and techniques students have discovered. 4. Each student will design and create three web pages of increasing orders of difficulty. The above make use of the following:
|
In the initiating activity the students will have viewed and discussed web pages for two to three days. They will have seen all the features that are available to them for use in their own pages and discussed the features that make up an effective page and an ineffective page. 2 days: Lecture/demonstration in lab using FrontPage to create a page using features 1 - 3, saving and retrieving in a network account, down-loading and incorporating a graphic from the Internet. 1 -2 days: Students will create a page, on a topic of their choosing, using
features presented so far. A rubric will be used to evaluate. Students will modify their page to incorporate all technologies and features covered to date. A rubric will be used for evaluation. 1 day: Lecture/demonstration on features 6,7,8. 2 days: Students will modify their page to incorporate the new features. Students are encouraged to learn to use features they discovered but were NOT taught in class (marquee, hover buttons etc.) . 7 days: Refining and Extending Task |

(Rubric or Activity Specific Key)
Key Questions:
* How many score points are needed to discriminate among the full range of different degrees of understanding, proficiency, or quality?
This response, product, or performance provides evidence of understanding of concept/principle/generalization or proficiency in skill/process/strategy.
The rubric below was used for the Refining and Extending task. Similar rubrics but more narrow in scope, were used for the other learning tasks.
A traditional written short answer test was used to evaluate knowledge and understanding of terminology. (Define each term and give an example of its use)
|
Score Point 4 |
Score Point 3 |
|
[ ]Very effectively used ALL (8) design elements covered in class. Used at least one design element that was not taught in class. |
[ ]Effectively used most (6 or 7) of the design elements covered in class. |
|
[ ]Used all the traits of an effective web page to create an effective, informative page. None of the characteristics of an ineffective page are present. |
[ ]Used most of the traits of an effective web page to create an effective, informative page. May contain at most one element of an ineffective page. |
|
[ ]Used a digital scanner and/or camera to produce at least four effective, excellent quality images. |
[ ]Used a digital scanner and/or camera to produce at least three effective, good quality images. |
|
Score Point 2 |
Score Point 1 |
|
[ ]Used between 3 and 5 FrontPage design elements covered in class to produce a web document |
[ ]Used less than 3 FrontPage elements in the creation of a web page. |
|
[ ]Used some of the traits of an effective web page to create an informative page. May contain at most three characteristics of an ineffective page. |
[ ] Page is not effective - contains mostly elements of an ineffective page. |
|
[ ]Used a digital scanner and/or camera to produce at least one image. |
[ ]Page contains no images produced from a digital scanner or camera. |
Have You Considered These Yet?
Learn to Learn Skills: The students needed to consult manuals, "Help Screens" and other students in order to do an effective job on the projects. Trial and error also played a major role. The students learned to depend on each other for specific information and techniques.
Assessment Modifications: None were required for these students however, it would be possible to modify the assessments to accommodate other students. The refining task however would most liked need some alteration.
Unit Schedule/Time Plan:
Initiating Activity: 2-3 days
Learning to use FrontPage and
associated technologies: 10 - 12 days
Extending and Refining Task: 7
days
** See Learning Experiences - Procedural Knowledge for details
Written Overview:
The unit was a success. The students enjoyed creatively using their knowledge of FrontPage, a scanner and the digital camera. Their projects were alive and fun. A few of the students noticed elements of web pages that can't be duplicated using FrontPage as your only tool and as a result want to explore Java, Active-X and other tools.
The refining and extending task performed with the AP U.S. History Class was very successful as well. The students worked very well together and took responsibility for the quality of their work. The division of tasks worked out very well. I think the history students learned a lot about constructing a web page, scanning etc. and the programming students learned about various aspects of Frederic Remington's life and times. The students learned that collaboration isn't always easy and involves much give and take. I think they appreciate that the presentation of information can take on different forms. They will enjoy showing off their work to the world on our web site.
The equipment used in this project is as follows:
1. Computer with Web creation software and Internet access. Frontpage was used is this project.
2. Digital Scanner
3. Digital Camera
4. Access to a LAN where each student or group of students have a user ID and can save and organize their work. This is helpful but not required.
5. Graphics software
