The above make use of the following:

  1. Classification
  2. Comparing
  3. Deduction
  4. Induction
  5. Error Analysis

In the initiating activity the students will have viewed and discussed web pages for two to three days. They will have seen all the features that are available to them for use in their own pages and discussed the features that make up an effective page and an ineffective page. 2 days: Lecture/demonstration in lab using FrontPage to create a page using features 1 - 3, saving and retrieving in a network account, down-loading and incorporating a graphic from the Internet. 1 -2 days:

Students will create a page, on a topic of their choosing, using features presented so far. A rubric will be used to evaluate.
2 days: Lecture/demonstration in lab discussing features 4 and 5, the digital scanner and "Photo Editor". Each student will use both devices. 2 - 3 days:

Students will modify their page to incorporate all technologies and features covered to date. A rubric will be used for evaluation.
1 day: Lecture/demonstration on features 6,7,8.
2 days:
Students will modify their page to incorporate the new features. Students are encouraged to learn to use features they discovered but were NOT taught in class (marquee, hover buttons etc.) .
7 days:

[X] Decision Making
(selecting from seemingly equal alternatives or examining the decisions of others)
[X ] Problem Solving
(seeking to achieve a goal by overcoming constraints or limiting conditions)
[X ] Invention
(creating something to meet a need or improve on a situation)
[ ] Experimental Inquiry
(generating an explanation for a phenomenon and testing the explanation)
[ ] Investigation
(resolving confusions or contradictions related to a historical event, a hypothetical past or future event, or to the defining characteristics of something)
[X ] Systems Analysis
(analyzing the parts of a system and how they interact)

Products/Performances:

The products and performances are all described above.

Criteria for evaluation:

  1. Terminology will be tested using a traditional short answer written test. (Define each term and give an example of its use)
  2. Each student will use the digital camera and scanner to place images in their web projects. The criteria will be based on the ability to create the images and the quality of the images (in the case of the scanner). The rubrics for the pages contain an element for each.
  3. Each student will use the outlined features of FrontPage to create web pages. The performance criteria will include the existence of each element, the appropriateness of elements and the quality of implementation. The rubric for the web pages contain an element for these features.

Have You Considered These Yet?

Learn to Learn Skills: The students needed to consult manuals, "Help Screens" and other students in order to do an effective job on the projects. Trial and error also played a major role. The students learned to depend on each other for specific information and techniques.

Assessment Modifications: None were required for these students however, it would be possible to modify the assessments to accommodate other students. The refining task however would most liked need some alteration.

Unit Schedule/Time Plan:

Initiating Activity: 2-3 days
Learning to use FrontPage and associated technologies: 10 - 12 days
Extending and Refining Task: 7 days

** See Learning Experiences - Procedural Knowledge for details

Written Overview:

The unit was a success. The students enjoyed creatively using their knowledge of FrontPage, a scanner and the digital camera. Their projects were alive and fun. A few of the students noticed elements of web pages that can't be duplicated using FrontPage as your only tool and as a result want to explore Java, Active-X and other tools.

The refining and extending task performed with the AP U.S. History Class was very successful as well. The students worked very well together and took responsibility for the quality of their work. The division of tasks worked out very well. I think the history students learned a lot about constructing a web page, scanning etc. and the programming students learned about various aspects of Frederic Remington's life and times. The students learned that collaboration isn't always easy and involves much give and take. I think they appreciate that the presentation of information can take on different forms. They will enjoy showing off their work to the world on our web site.

The equipment used in this project is as follows:

1. Computer with Web creation software and Internet access. Frontpage was used is this project.

2. Digital Scanner

3. Digital Camera

4. Access to a LAN where each student or group of students have a user ID and can save and organize their work. This is helpful but not required.

5. Graphics software
