LEARNING EXPERIENCE OUTLINE


TITLE OF THE LEARNING EXPERIENCE: Native Americans Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow: A Native American PowerPoint Presentation by Lynn Snyder

1. LEARNING CONTEXT
Describe the purpose, objective, or focus of the learning experience, including:

  • the learning standard(s) and the specific performance indicators being assessed;
  • a description of where this experience fits into the school or course curriculum; and
  • what students need to know and/or be able to do to succeed with this learning experience.

INTRODUCTION: In addition to completing a research paper, students will work cooperatively to create a slide presentation on their particular Native American tribe to share with the class. This project will allow students to not only work cooperatively with another student, but also to integrate computer technology into English and Social Studies classes. Through slide presentations all students will be provided with more in-depth information about the history of many Native American tribes.

ENGLISH STANDARDS:

STANDARD 1: Students will read, write, listen and speak for information and understanding. STANDARD 2: Students will read, write, listen and speak for critical analysis and evaluation. STANDARD 3: Students will read, write, listen and speak for social interaction.

SOCIAL STUDIES STANDARDS:

STANDARD 1: Students will use a variety of intellectual skills to demonstrate their understanding of major ideas, eras, themes, developments, and turning points in the history of the US and NY. STANDARD 2: Students will use a variety of intellectual skills to demonstrate their understanding of major ideas, eras, themes, developments, and turning points in world history an examine the broad sweep of history from a variety of perspectives. STANDARD 3: Students will use a variety of intellectual skills to demonstrate their understanding of the geography of the interdependent world in which we live (local, national, and global) including the distribution of people, places and environments over the Earth's surface.

OBJECTIVES:

1. Students will be able to choose important from their Native American tribes' research to include in an oral slide presentation.

  1. Students will be able to work cooperatively with a partner to create their presentations.
  2. Students will be able to comprehend the step-by-step process of creating a slide presentation using "Microsoft PowerPoint."
  3. Students will be able to create a slide presentation using "Microsoft PowerPoint" for their Native American tribe.
  4. Students will be able to comprehend the proper public speaking techniques used in an oral presentation.

2. PROCEDURE
Describe, in narrative form, the actions of students and teachers and the interactions among and between students and teachers, including how the learning experience:

  • supports student progress toward attainment of the learning standards;
  • reflects current scholarship in your field and "best" classroom practic; and
  • incorporates technology (when used) into instruction to enhance learning and to assess student performance.

STUDENTS:

  1. Students will work cooperatively with a partner to choose information for their oral presentation.
  2. Students will visit the computer lab for instructions on creating a slide presentation using "Microsoft PowerPoint."
  3. Students will create their slide presentations on index cards prior to using the computer.
  4. Students will include a minimum of eight slides in their presentations.
  5. Students will use at least four different slide layouts.
  6. Students will use spell check prior to completion of their presentations.
  7. Students will experiment with transitions and builds (tools).
  8. Students will experiment with bullets (formats)
  9. Students will create a slide presentation that is visually effective.
  10. Students will present a slide presentation using "Microsoft PowerPoint" to the class.
  11. Students will include the assigned topics in their slide presentation (location, shelter, diet, family life, options, theme: prejudice, stereotypes or conflict).

TEACHER:

  1. Teacher will share a sample PowerPoint presentation with students created by teacher.
  2. Teacher will prepare step-by-step instructions for students regarding creating a slide presentation using PowerPoint.
  3. Teacher will demonstrate PowerPoint program for students.
  4. Teacher will check student's index card presentation prior to students using computers.
  5. Teacher will evaluate students oral presentation of their slide show.

3. INSTRUCTIONAL/ENVIRONMENTAL MODIFICATIONS
Describe the procedures used to accommodate the range of abilities in the classroom, including students with disabilities, limited english proficiency, or bilingual students, such as:

  • instructional modifications made; and
  • physical modifications of the classroom setting.
  1. Students will be paired according to their assigned tribe.
  2. Attempts will be made to accommodate student differences.
  3. PowerPoint has been installed on computers in Remedial and Resource classrooms to allow students additional time on presentations if needed.
  4. Classes will be held in either a computer lab or classroom with a computer cluster.

4. TIME REQUIRED
For each aspect of the learning experience, state the amount of time for:

  • planning;
  • implementation (note the length of your class period, where appropriate, and the number of days to implement the experience); and
  • assessment
  1. Block Schedule: 3 blocks for creation of slide show
  2. Clock Schedule: 2 blocks to present slide show, 1/2 block each day
  3. Assessment Grades: Printed Slide show, Oral presentation of the slide show

STUDENTS:

  1. Note cards and research paper information, 2. Blank 3" by 5" index cards, 3. Step-by-step instructions for "Microsoft PowerPoint"

TEACHERS:

  1. Step-by-step instructions for "Microsoft PowerPoint", 2. Slide layout options sheet, 3. PowerPoint index card check list, 4. PowerPoint Presentation grade sheet, 5. Computers with "Microsoft PowerPoint" software, 6. Television with computer attachment for viewing

6. ASSESSMENT PLAN
Describe the:

  • manner in which students are involved in developing assessment criteria, maintaining an awareness of their progress, and reflection on their work;
  • techniques used to collect evidence of student progress toward meeting the learning standards' performance indicators (eg. , observation, group discussions, journal writing, use of alternative testing techniques); and
  • tools used to document student progress (eg., scoring guides, rating scales, check-lists). Please submit these tools.

Students are provided with a PowerPoint Presentation Packet on the first day of the project which includes:

1. PowerPoint Presentation sheet of objectives, directions and materials 2. Step-by-step instructions for creating a slide presentation using PowerPoint software 3. Slide Layout options sheet 4. PowerPoint index card check list 5. PowerPoint Presentation Grade Sheet

Students must complete their index card presentation, check it using the check list and have it checked by the teacher before preceding to the computer.

* Studnets receive up to 10 points on their final grade from this step.

7. STUDENT WORK
Send three or four samples of student work:

  • that reflect different levels of student performance; and
  • include comments reflecting the basis for teacher's assessment.

8. REFLECTION
Please offer personal comments on the learning experience:

  • why this lesson was developed for the specific learning standard(s) and performance indicator(s);
  • what you learned from implementing this lesson; and
  • how the lesson was reviewed by peers prior to submission and what you learned from the review.
  1. Slide Presentation satisfied English Standards 1, 3, and 4 and Social Studies Standards 1,2, and 3.
  2. Slide Presentations provided all students with a more in-depth view of Native American Tribes.
  3. Learned from implementing this project: * It took cooperation and flexibility of my peers to make this a successful venture. * Cooperation from students can range from frustration to positively wonderful!! * Students are always on different levels when it comes to working on computers. * Most students were very excited and enjoyed creating their slide presentations. * Students were very proud of their accomplishments! * Many of the students did not proofread and/or spellcheck their presentations before printing their final copy. (Even with reminders.)
