Frederic Remington: His Life and Times

Purpose:
This project is being designed to fulfill the requirements of a Title III Grant to incorporate technology into the English/Language Arts and Social Studies curriculum. This learning unit and its subsequent learning experiences are designed to be a collaboration between Mr. Snyder's AP U.S. History Class and Mr. Cavanaugh's Computer Programing Class. The culmination of the collaboration will center around the development of a world wide web page that showcases the life and times of Frederic Remington, the famous artist.
Mr. Snyder's class will be involved in a culminating activity that has them responsible for developing the historical background and doing research on Frederic Remington the artist, the man, and the time period in which he lived. This will be accomplished through the preparation of a research paper and presentation to be delivered to the class. The research paper that is created through a collaborative pairing of students will be the cornerstone of the text for the world wide web homepage. Mr. Cavanaugh's class will be responsible for the physical development of the world wide web homepage. This will include placing of text, pictures and graphics on the page to create the optimum aesthetic value.
Students in both classes will gain an better understanding of the technology and techniques involved in world wide web page development along with a better understanding of Frederic Remington. This final product will also hone the students skills at research, editing and group decision making.

Requirements:
The students will:

• be required to work with two other classmates on a class presentation dealing with an aspect of Frederic Remington's Life & Times that will be graded by the RUBRIC FOR GRADING PRESENTATIONS .[PRESENTATIONS START ON MARCH 24 | THE ORDER WILL BE DETERMINED BY LOTTERY | THERE WILL BE TWO PRESENTATIONS EACH DAY FROM MARCH 24 - 29]
• be required to submit one copy of a two to three page typed single spaced research paper that details the material that is to be presented to each of the folowing people:

- Mr. Snyder for a grade using the RUBRIC FOR GRADING RESEARCH PAPERS
- Mr. Cavanaugh's students as part of the collaboration on the final webpage
- Ms. Shea at the Remington Museum for her comments after the
collaboration with Mr. Cavanaugh's class before web posting

• be required to assist Mr. Cavanaugh's students by providing graphics, photos, or any item that can be scanned into the webpage relating to Frederic Remington and his life and times.
• develop the research paper with at least four sources. Two of which will be from electronic media and two from reference texts in the library.
• select a Class Editor to determine deadlines and schedules for working with Mr. Cavanaugh's students.

Grading Procedures:
PRESENTATIONS:
The students will:

• be required to use the Rubric to grade presentation of their classmates. The Rubric will be used in the following manner:

2/3 of the student grade will come from the average of student's Rubrics
1/3 of the student grade will come from Mr. Snyder's Rubric

RESEARCH PAPERS:

• Mr. Snyder will be grading the Reseach Papers by using the Rubric For Grading Research Papers.
