OVERVIEW

In Science 7,a unit is devoted to the human body. It consists of 7 chapters. This learning unit allows a student to explore a particular body system or organ and the effect of outside influences on its function.

CONTENT KNOWLEDGE

Declarative

Procedural

 1. Define body systems and their functions.

 1. Choose an organ or system and draw and label a diagram.

 2. Research the chosen organ or system.

 3. Write a paper describing the organ or system and explain how it helps the body perform its activities.

2. Understand how outside influences affect the function of the human body.

 1. Research how alcohol abuse, drug abuse, environmental pollution, or poor nutrition contribute to problems or diseases of your chosen organ or system.

 2. Write a paper based on this research and discuss ways to maintain the organ or system in good health.

 3. Share understanding of how to maintain organ or system with an oral presentation.

ESSENTIAL QUESTIONS

How does the organ or system function?

How does alcohol abuse, drug abuse, environmental pollution, or poor nutrition affect your ability to maintain good health?

CONNECTIONS TO NYS LEARNING STANDARDS
List Standard # and Key Idea #: Write out related Performance Indicator(s) or Benchmark(s)

Mathematics, Science, and Technology Standard 4

Key Idea 1: Living things are both similar to and different from each other and nonliving

things.

Performance Indicators 1.2: Students will describe and explain the structures

and functions of the human body at different organizational levels.

Key Idea 5: Organisms maintain a dynamic equilibrium that sustains life.

Performance Indicator 5.2: Students will explain diseases as a failure of

homeostasis.

English Language Arts Standard 1

Key Idea 1: Read to acquire information and understanding involving collecting data,

facts and ideas; discover relationships, concepts, and generalizations; and use

knowledge from written and electronic sources.

Performance Indicator: Students will interpret and analyze information from

reference materials. Compare and synthesize information from different sources.

Key Idea 2: Speaking and writing to acquire and transmit information requires asking

probing and clarifying questions, interpreting information in one’s own words, applying

information from one context to another and presenting the information and

interpreting clearly, concisely, and comprehensively.

Performance Indicator: Students will produce oral report on topic.

INITIATING ACTIVITY

Use a model of the liver and have students do the Know part of a KWL.

Use BOOKENDS and have students explore the affects of drugs, alcohol, etc. on the liver.

LEARNING EXPERIENCES
In chronological order including acquisition experiences and extending/refining
experiences for all stated declarative and procedural knowledge.

Using the textbook and references from the library (including Health Reference Center database ) students will:

Complete a Key Term strategy to help them understand the function of the organ or system chosen.

Research their subject and take notes on content.

Complete a Graphic Organizer to assist them in deciding the main function of their subject.

Refine and Extend that information by using deductive reasoning to write a 1 page essay that draws conclusions from facts about how the organ or system functions and helps the body perform its activities.

Using a library reference book, a Health Reference Center database article, and an on line Sirs Discover magazine article, students will:

Use a Cause and Effect organizer to direct research on the affect of outside influences (drug abuse, alcohol abuse, environmental pollution, poor nutrition, etc.) on the human body.

Refine and Extend that information by using inductive reasoning to draw general conclusions from research about the causes of diseases and hypothesize how to maintain the organ or system in good health.

Write an essay of 1 page.

CULMINATING PERFORMANCE
Include rubric(s)

Given the effects of outside influences on the good health of the organ or system researched, students will share their understanding of how to make appropriate choices to maintain a healthy body.

Students will produce an oral report from their second research paper that clearly explains what choices should be made and why.

Rubric for Oral Report

4

Well organized and clearly supported by facts from research. Describes effect of influences. Explains results to be expected from good choices.

3

Fairly well organized. Some use of facts. Describes some effects of influences. Explains some results from good choices.

2

Lacks organization and supporting facts. Presents some effects of influences. Weak explanation of why good choices should be made.

1

Disorganized. No supporting information. Does not explain what choices should be made.

PRE-REQUISITE SKILLS

Library research skills to locate appropriate reference books, articles from Health Reference Center database, and magazine articles from Sirs Discoverer.

Use of notecards and bibliography cards in appropriate format.

MODIFICATIONS

Adaptation for special education students. Follow IEP for extended time period etc.

UNIT SCHEDULE/TIME PLAN

  4 Week Unit

Week 1- Reserve library. Introduce project. Students choose topic and set deadlines.Obtain reference book. Use internet to locate Health Reference Center article on body system or organ and how it functions. Instruct students on bibliography and notecard preparation. Emphasize paper is to be written from notes on cards. Collect diagram and research paper on function.

Week 2-Reserve library. Instruct students in internet use of Sirs Discoverer for magazine article for research on causes of health problems or diseases and how to maintain organ or system in good health. Students obtain reference book and article from Health Reference Center database. Prepare bibliography cards and notecards for second paper.

Week 3- Collect research paper on these health problems or diseases and how the individual can maintain a healthy organ or system.

Week 4- Culminate with oral presentation based on how outside influences affect the human body.

*** Students will need to use some free time or study hall time to complete this project

TECHNOLOGY USE

Internet for research and computer word processor.
